Okavango Explorers Diaries
The emphasis of your stay and safari experience is on exploration and adventure. Consequently, a significant portion of wildlife viewing activities includes safari drives in our specially adapted vehicles, guided walking excursions, and canoeing on the Selinda Spillway as it flows into the Selinda Reserve from the upper reaches of the Okavango Delta. Canoeing along the Selinda Spillway channels is a unique and memorable experience, particularly during the winter months when these channels flood. This extraordinary adventure is unparalleled anywhere else in Africa.
Field Notes
Night drives
Our safaris at Selinda concession frequently extend into the night in pursuit of nocturnal species. Night drives are particularly productive, requiring patience but often resulting in sightings of lesser-known nocturnal mammals and even witnessing lion and hyena hunts.

Off the grid

The private 320,000-acre Selinda Reserve in northern Botswana is a prime habitat for predators and elephants. This carefully selected location provides access to some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the region, particularly along the southernmost section of the Selinda Spillway. Lions, leopards, and wild dogs frequently hunt in this area. The reserve also boasts significant populations of giraffe and buffalo, as well as rare antelope species such as roan, sable, and eland.

Safari

Experience the moments when wildlife gathers along the Selinda Spillway to drink, and marvel at the African sunset over the wildlife-rich plains. Safari activities include wildlife viewing drives, canoeing, and guided walks, as Okavango Explorers Camp is situated in one of the most remote areas of the private Selinda reserve. Enjoy up-close encounters with lions, leopards, elephants, wild dogs, buffalo, hyenas, eland, zebra, and other ungulate species. This region is ideal for bird-watching, offering numerous opportunities to spot both resident and migratory species, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon.

Giant herds

During the peak of the dry season in late September, the Selinda Reserve has been documented to host over 9,000 elephants, and thousands of buffalo, concentrated along the river system. For elephant enthusiasts, this is an ideal destination in the dry season. Additionally, Selinda offers exceptional birdwatching opportunities, attracting those seeking to add rare species to their life lists.
