When considering sustainability in construction, wood poses unique challenges. Great Plains tackled this by constructing the camp without using any newly cut wood, opting instead for recycled or reclaimed wood sourced from old cuts or abandoned railway lines. However, our commitment to sustainability extends beyond wood. Plastics have been nearly eradicated from our operations, including the building and design processes. Sitatunga Private Island harmoniously integrates with the natural surroundings of the Okavango Delta, evoking a sense of its ancestral origins.
Explorations at Sitatunga Private Island are centered around the permanent channels and islands of the Okavango Delta. Boating and game drives bring you close to wildlife. This is truly a refreshing yet peaceful experience allowing for wildlife and bird viewing from a unique perspective. Tag and release fishing is available from March to December each year.

The ancient Okavango Delta has a deep history and while the area has been inhabited for thousands of years, the location was recounted in the notebooks of legendary explorers, including David Livingstone who wrote in 1849: While ascending in this way the beautifully-wooded river, we came to a large stream flowing into it. This was the Tamunak'le. I enquired whence it came. Oh, from a country full of rivers – so many no one can tell their number – and full of large trees.

Behind the name
Sitatunga is named after the rare and beautiful water-dwelling antelope with long, twisting horns and a distinctive red coat with stripes and spots.

Sitatunga Island Camp is about 10 minutes away from the airstrip and we provide complimentary road transfer to camp. Private charters on our fleet of luxury aircraft as well as helicopters are available by request.

For family or friends traveling together, the 2-bedroom Sitatunga Private Island Suite features a lounge with an outdoor plunge pool area and dining lounge. Designed to comfortably accommodate four adults, or two adults and up to three children sharing, in two separate en-suite bedrooms. For larger family groups the entire camp can be exclusively chartered.
