Signature Guided Safaris® Journeys

Wildlife +

Apart from the beauty of the wetland habitat, game viewing is excellent almost all year. The Okavango Delta supports resilient populations of several critically endangered large mammal species, including the Rhinoceros, Cheetah, Lion and African Wild Dog all adapted to the wetland ecosystem. The heart of the Okavango Delta is the Moremi Game Reserve where all the major habitats and ecotones of the Okavango are preserved. Large private reserves (concessions) are leased out to safari operators under strict guidelines and carrying capacities, thus the luxury camps are small and intimate. These private concessions offer the best wildlife safari experiences with massive tracts of pristine wilderness and exclusivity.
Field Notes
OKAVANGO WATER LILIES The life history of the waterlily is a story in itself – look across a lagoon, and you’ll notice that while some of the blooms are white, others are a delicate shade of purple. Ecologically fascinating, waterlilies play an important part in the local lifestyle. To the people of the Okavango, the waterlily is a source of food, health and comfort.

The Okavango is Important Birding Area, home to 24 species of birds facing global endangerment, encompassing, among others, the Southern Ground-Hornbill, Wattled Crane, Slaty Egret and 6 species of Vulture.

OKAVANGO’S BIG CATS
In flourishing ecosystems such as the Okavango Delta, there's a notable presence of apex predators facilitated by flourishing plant life at lower trophic levels. These plants support thriving populations of herbivores, consequently sustaining larger predators at the top of the food chain. Such abundant biodiversity serves as a testament to the overall health of the ecosystem, and the extraordinary levels of wildlife present here, particularly within Botswana's typically dry terrain, are a rarity throughout the continent of Africa.
